Street markets and cafes
Nelson’s Saturday Market is world famous for its focus on local produce and crafts. It’s a wonderful social gathering place full of colour and energy. It is just one of may regular markets in the region.
Some say Nelson has more cafes per person than anywhere else in New Zealand. Each has its own unique character and many even roast their own coffee.
Music, art and artisans
The newly-refurbished Nelson School of Music – world renowned for its acoustics – is the hub for national and international classical music performers. And then there is the biennial Adam Nelson International Chamber Music Festival – New Zealand’s biggest chamber music event.
The Theatre Royal is the venue for a continuous programme of local and visiting theatre, music and dance.
The Suter is an art gallery with a permanent collection of national importance. There are also regularly changing exhibitions by national and international artists.
Nelson has long been a haven for artists and craftspeople and you can find their work in a myriad of small galleries and showrooms throughout the town and region.
Wine, seafood, fruit and artisan foods
The Nelson region has many boutique vineyards that produce distinctive and often award winning wines.
Nelson is renowned for its wide range of fresh seafood.
It is also one of the country’s best fruit growing areas.
And a mecca for artisan food and drink like cheeses, breads, olive oil, gourmet vegetables, craft beer and cider.
Long sweeping beaches
The region is famous for its coastline of wide golden-sand beached. And of course the internationally famous Abel Tasman National Park.
Walk and cycle ways
There is a walkway-cycleway that runs from one end of the bay to the other.
Throughout the town and in the hills behind there are numerous walkways and viewing points.
Wilderness
This regions boasts 5 national and forest parks that range from coastal to alpine. There is a wealth of wilderness right on our doorstep. Then of course there is the bay to sail and fish.
